At the end, we had 3 classifiers (Bianca, Jacqueline, and myself: Yara) that did all the morphology classfication (except for a few that Jacqueline miessed, but not many), and also we had some classifications from Maria (a few in each cluster) and from Marc (only did HI galaxies).

I've combined all those classifications into a unique morphology that has 3 important pieces of information: 1 is the general morphology type, another is the degree of interaction (if any) and the last is the confidence of the morphology value (trust)

You can download the tables here: final_morphs_for_wiki.tar.gz

the tables have the following colums:

  1. ID (as in INT photometric catalogue)
  2. Yara's morphology classification
  3. Bianca's morphology classification
  4. Jacqueline's morphology classification (999 = no classification available)
  5. Maria's morphology classification (999 = no classification available)
  6. Marc's morphology classification (999 = no classification available)
  7. combined final morphology
  8. only main morph type
  9. only interaction level
  10. trust (of the final morph). In my opinion, you should only trust morphologies with trust > 0.2 and if you need to be VERY strict then use trust >=0.75

You probably only need the columns I've highlighted….

If you are looking for merger/interacting galaxies, then select those with morph = 4 or interaction = 9

FAQs

i) Which galaxies were selected for the morphological examination?

the same selection as for spectroscopy except for:

  • Unordered List Iteminclusion of literature-z galaxies
  • inclusion of all HI galaxies (no mag limit)
  • we did not restrict to the WHT area, but instead we took the area surveyed in HI

ii) What are the main combined classifications?

1 = Elliptical
2 = S0 (or disky early-type, as it is very hard to tell)
3 = Spiral: a late-type disk galaxy
4 = Irregular
5 = Unclassifiable (e.g. too compact)
6 = There is not a galaxy
n6 = when only 1 classifier thought there was interaction/merger
n9 = when 2 or more classifiers thought there was an interaction/merger

iii) What are the final “main morphology type” and “interaction level” numbers?

the combined morphology is as described below, sometimes it can be for example = 39 (i.e. interacting spiral), so it might be more useful to have it separatelly as main morph = 3 and interaction=9

iv) How did you calculate the trust?

  • perfect= mor1=mor2=mor3 (trust=1.0)
  • 2 (out of 3) agreed (trust=0.75)
  • all agreed on main morph (trust=0.75)
  • all had some disturbance (trust=0.75)
  • 2 agreed on main morph and opther =5 (trust=0.5)
  • 2 agreed on main morph and other didn't (trust=0.5)
  • 2 agree on main type (et or lt) (trust=0.15)
  • all different but 2 or more have dist=9 (trust=0.1)
  • 2 or 3 5's or 6's (trust=0.05)
  • all different (trust=0.0)

I did it that way for Bianca+Jacqueline+me but then by eye I also included Maria's and Marc's morphologies and changed the trust using a similar reazoning!
