I started watching Celtic in 1970 and therefore had the honour to see most of the Lisbon Lions play for Celtic. It's difficult to choose between them but my personal favourite has to be Wee Jinky with Bobby Lennox close by. It was strange to have been introduced to football as a young boy then and to be able to go and watch them play each week. I thought that football would always be like this. When would we win the league and how many would we score were the questions we asked ourselves. It was all so easy. Then reality set in, Big Jock was seriousely injured in a car crash and we were all brought to down to earth with a bang. Big Jock and his Lions were very special and we will never see there likes again. Keep up the good work! Hail Hail Jim McGarry Celtic Programmes Online ps I have a small tribute to the Lions on my Web site. If you thinks that it's worthy, maybe you could include a link on your Web site. I will certainly be adding yours to my links page. http://www.celticprogrammesonline.com/popserver/lisbon.htm From DesmondScullion@aol.com Fri Nov 29 09:19:13 2002 Date: Thu, 28 Nov 2002 20:18:03 EST From: DesmondScullion@aol.com To: garrett@jive.nl Subject: Lisbon Lions I have just returned home from the Celta match and have just visited your site. Well done, tears to a glass eye. I was interested in your request about tales surrounding the great day. Ley me bore you with my recollection. On the day of the game we went to 10 O'Clock Mass in St. Patrick's Dumbarton. The whole 8 of us. My Dad spent the early part of the afternoon laying a foundation for a garage. I remember helping him, aged 7. I think I lit his fags. At some point he turned and said to me " Son if we win tonight, "THEY" can never take it away from us." I think the producer of Braveheart pinched his line. Anyway, we went to my Granny's house, having 6 weans meant that we obviously didn't have a telly, to watch the game. I remember being numb when we lost the first the goal. At half time me and my 2 brothers went outside and burned a picture of Inter. Think it came in that day's Daily Express. After the match we went back home to a scheme which was ghostly quiet, except for a handful of wee Tims dancing up and down outside the houses with their curtains drawn. 33 years later my wife took me to Lisbon for my 40th Birthday. I am amazed that a woman could care so much. We took a taxi out to Cruz Quebrada. Like thousands of Celtic men and women before me I stood at the edge of the park and broke my heart crying. My Dad was right. "They can never take this away from us." Oh, and the garage still survives to this day. Hail! Hail! Yours in Celtic. God Bless john mullen Hi Great to see a tribute sight to the mighty Lisbon Lions. My grandfather played in the 1932-33 side and was a big Patsy Gallagher fan. My late dad was a devotee and passed onto me the respect due to this greatest ever Scottish League side and their legendary Manager Jock Stein. I too have a collection of Celtic books and memorabilia and with other Celtic supporters here in Australia continue our families' allegiances with the mighty green and whites. Thanks for the web site and long may they be remembered! I feel in common with all Celtic supporters great pride every time I here the word "Lisbon" as it only means one thing to me 25th May 1967. A few years ago I managed to persaude my wife and family to go to Portugal on holiday we hired a flat in Sesimbra a small fishing town about 10 to 15 miles south of the city. When our hire car arrived there was only one place to go and once we had seen the stadium we then planned to drive up the coast for lunch so armed with directions to the Stadium we set off only to find that our turn off on the Lisbon side of the large bridge near the statue of Christ was blocked due to road works! The next 2 1/2 hours were spent driving round Lisbon trying to escape from the city . Anyone who has driven there will know how scarey it is [the left hand drive car did not help!] After many close encounters I eventualy by complete accident find the motorway with the sign "Estadio Nacional" Arriving at the stadium was a feeling of great excitment as I had dreamt about it since 1967 I was in my early 40's then but I felt like a child going to see Father Christmas !! Walking into the stadium I could not speak and I was shaking as many fans say it is almost a religious experience and my mind wandered back to the game which means so much to us all. I then proceded to take dozens of photo's and wandered round every part of the ground. My family did not really understand fully but they were very patient with me. I have been fortunate to meet most of the "Lisbon Lions" and seeing the stadium made me feel contented [once I had calmed down] I was in Milan for the 1970 final I also have great memories and regrets about that occasion. If only I had been old enough and could have afforded to go to Lisbon but this visit made up for it in some small way. Just to finish on the road out of the Stadium I took a wrong turn and instead of a relaxing lunch on the coast I ended up back in the city centre!!! When I eventually escaped back to the flat I opened the duty free and although I was a nervous wreck after my drive I was a happy one!!! Hail Hail!
