The final of the European cup - now the Champions League - was played on 25 May, 1967 in the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon. The stadium is still there, and is used for the Portuguese cup final every May. So if you are here in Lisbon for Euro 2004, why not jump on a train and have a look at this piece of British footballing history. Get the train from Cais de Sodre to Cruz Quebrada, and go right, away from the sea, up the hill into the park area. If you keep walking for 10 minutes, you will arive at the stadium. It is a little like a Roman amphitheatre - there are only three sides to it, with one side completely open with views down the valley - and is really lovely. There is usually nobody around up there, and it used to be possible to actually get on the pitch and recreate those magical moments from 1967. However, this summer (2004) it is being used as England's training ground. And there are controversial plans to demolish it and build a group of seven government Ministry blocks there, instead.
