Final Announcement, April 2003

Pictures from the workshop

Objectives Following the success of the first e-VLBI Workshop held at MIT Haystack Observatory in April 2002, numerous tests and trials of e-VLBI have been staged around the world. In the second workshop we aim to share the experience gained from these experiments and explore possibilities for coordination and cooperation.

Topics to be discussed:
  • Reports on eVLBI tests and demonstrations
  • Plans for ongoing eVLBI development
  • Status of interaction with network providers and developers
  • International networking facilities - now and future
  • Standards and protocols for eVLBI data transfer.
  • Hardware and software interfaces to telescope back-ends and correlators
The meeting will follow the style of the Haystack workshop with oral presentations of about 20 minutes and space for poster presentations. Again, representatives of the networking community will be invited to present their views and projections for e-VLBI, both as a future user and as a partner in the development of high performance international networks.

Location     The meeting will be hosted by JIVE at the observatory in the Netherlands. The observatory, which is also the the headquarters of ASTRON, is located about 3 km from the little town of Dwingeloo, in the province of Drenthe, about 150km north-east of Amsterdam. Situated next to the institute is the old 25m Dwingeloo telescope (now no longer in operation). The institute is located in the middle of a National Park "Dwingelderveld", a very pleasant wooded area with miles of cycle paths through the park (and many Dutch tourists in the summer). It is an excellent, restful location for scientists from around the world to come and work. Apart from the village of Dwingeloo that is within "biking distance", the nearest towns (with a railway station) are Beilen (about 15 km) and Hoogeveen (about 20 km).
